New youth services coordinator & self checkout station at Maryville Public Library

The Maryville City Council heard the annual report from Maryville Public Library Director Stephanie Patterson during Monday night's meeting.  Patterson says  library patrons are seeing the benefits of the tax increase for library services passed by voters two years ago.

"We hired our youth services - full-time youth service- coordinator which was a big step for us so that she can devote her time coordinating and improving and adding to our children's services and collections.  And we also took the budget for the books and electronic services, including e-books, up to where it needs to be to meet state standards.  We've been working on that 4 or 5 years and so we met our goal.  So if we look at our budget a few years ago - 2 or 3 years ago- compared to what we have now, our book budget has doubled."

Patterson says the book budget has increased from 30 thousand to 65 thousand dollars in the past couple of years.  Patterson adds further improvements are planned in the next few months.

"Just learn that we're receiving a grant for just over $6000, and most of that is going to go towards our 1st self check-out station for borrowers.  So if you've ever come in the library and we're busy at the desk and you're standing in line to check out a book or 2 or a DVD. you should be able to do that a little more quickly. So that's for the convenience of our borrowers.  Also for privacy, too.  So that if you want to check something out and don't necessarily wan to interact with staff, you'll have that option."

Patterson also says they are pursuing another grant to help upgrade the Maryville Public Library conference rooms.
