Give turtles a brake

The Missouri Department of Conservation would like to encourage motorists to give turtles crossing roads a brake. MDC spokesperson Joe Jerek says that as the weather warms up, motorists should expect to see more turtles on the roadways.

Turtles may be crossing the street for a variety of reasons, from searching for territory to absorbing heat from the asphalt. If you see a turtle in the road, MDC encourages you to slow down and try to safely steer around it. Jerek also says that motorists planning to help a turtle move should take caution because human lives are more important.

If you decide to move a turtle off a roadway, first make sure no traffic is coming. And, when you set the turtle down off the roadway, be sure it is heading in the same direction it was originally going.
