Area Special Olympics basketball tournament set for this weekend

The Special Olympics Missouri North Area Basketball Tournament is coming to Maryville this weekend. On Saturday, Jan. 20 athletes will gather at Bearcat Arena for the annual tournament. Special Olympics Missouri North Area Program Director Alyssa Cress says there are four different formats of basketball that will be played Saturday.

The day begins at 10 a.m. with the opening ceremony. Entertainment will be provided by the Special Olympics Cheerleaders and various Northwest groups. The ceremony will also consist of the running of the Special Olympics torch and the athlete's oath. Games will start at 11 a.m. and run until approximately 3 p.m. Cress says this is the first stop on the trip to the Special Olympics State Tournament, which takes place in St. Joseph this year.

The public is invited to the event to show support and cheer on the athletes.
