Turning up thermostat can save energy

Warmer summer temperatures are on the way.
Media Relations Specialist for Nebraska Public Power District, Grant Otten, says there are a few ways to keep your home cool this summer while also saving energy.

"Keeping the temperature set at a higher level during the day and then cooling down when you come home and in turn save some energy throughout the day.  If you can, leave your thermostat as high as possible during the day.  The Department of Energy says 85 degrees if you're not at home, 78 degrees if you are home.  Of course you can kind of work with that to whatever works best for you.  Maybe 78 degrees is a little too hot.  If you have a fan you can turn on, that will help cool down up to 4 degrees in the room you're living in.  Or you can turn down the thermostat just a little more to keep it a little bit cooler whatever is manageable for you."

Otten says the key to a cool and energy saving home is to do what you can to keep the home cool during the day without letting the airconditioning stay on while you are not at home. To learn more visit NPPD.com or contact your local power provider.
