'Stop Rx Greed' Campaign stops in Des Moines

The campaign to drive down perscription drug prices, "Stop Rx Greed", made a stop in Des Moines, Iowa yesterday. According to AARP, Americans pay the highest perscription drug prices in the world. Iowa's state advocacy director, Anthony Carroll, says concern for high perscription drug prices crosses all party and ideological lines.

"Americans pay the highest perscription drug costs in the world.  And for us it's really wrong that we believe so many Iowans, older Iowans, are forced to chose between filling perscriptions and bying groceries.  And we've really seen it sky-rocket."

A national survey by AARP found that 47 percent of those polled said that they had delayed filling or did not get a prescription filled because they could not afford it. 63 percent of those surveyed think that perscription drug prices are "unreasonable".  To lower them, Carroll says AARP believes medicare should be allowed to negotiate prescription prices, and legislation is needed to improve access to lower cost generic drugs.

"We really want this legislation to move forward.  And again there's no one silver bullet, it's going to require a multitude of efforts to really lower perscription drug costs."
