Stanberry end-of-year school budget comes out stronger than expected

The Stanberry R-II Board of Education held their regular meeting on Monday. Superintendent Bob Heddinger says the end-of-year budget came out stronger than expected.

"A budget that began last year with a deficit as a projection, we ended with a positive balance.  Still working on the final numbers, but it looks like we're going to end with a balance near $80,000, which is a nice number to be able to carry forward."

The amended balance allowed the board to approve a 4.1% raise for all returning staff members.

"We were able to give raises to the staff.  We raised our base salary $32,100, which comes out to a 4.1% raise across the board.  Which we were also able to pass along to our support staff and administration."

Heddinger credits the positive balance to economic factors and frugal budgeting.

"We've always had a really conservative approach with our revenue projections and then a more than liberal approach with our expenditures.  Interest rates changed in the nation and we have some investments that had a bigger return because interest rates have gone up.  And funding came in a little higher than anticipated."

The board will review the final budget for the 2019-2020 school year at their meeting in August.
