Pressure cooker left behind after sale of vehicle

An investigation into a suspicious package found outside the US Bank at 120 South Main in Maryville ended with the item being a pressure cooker left behind by a customer of the bank. Maryville Public Safety closed several blocks surrounding the bank after the item was discovered around 11:30 Friday morning. Maryville Public Safety Director Keith Wood says a bomb detection unit from the Missouri Highway Patrol in Jefferson City flew in to inspect the cooker, arriving in Maryville around 4:40.

"They shot an x-ray of it; it didn't show anything on the inside, so the gentleman in the fancy suit took it apart and there was nothing in it."

Wood says after reviewing video surveillance from US Bank, a person of interest was detained earlier Friday afternoon. Wood says the individual sold his vehicle in the parking lot of U-S Bank Thursday and in removing personal items from the vehicle, left the pressure cooker in the parking lot.

"The purchaser of the pick-up which belonged to this gentleman banks there and so it was convenient to cash his check and other things.  I think in the process of cleaning the truck out, the gentleman put the pressure cooker over there with the intention to come back later.  That didn't happen.  We were really fortunate because the corporate security folks in Kansas City with US Bank were able to look at some of the remote camera work from up here and actually put him in the parking lot with that."

Wood says the video of the incident matched up with the individual's testimony to police.
