Pedestrian Awareness Campaign to kick off today

The Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety is gearing up for a week long Pedestrian Awareness Campaign to educate drivers and pedestrians about being alert of their surroundings and how to ensure everyone's safety. Spokesperson for Missouri Department of Transportation, Tara Van Loo, says in 2018, 97 pedestrians were killed in Missouri and 254 were seriously injured on Missouri roadways.

"The top factors why pedestrians are getting seriously injured or killed on Missouri roadways is failing to yield, alcohol and/or drug impairment, and distraction and inattention when they are walking along the roadway."

Van Loo says pedestrians should be cautious, aware of their surroundings, and as visible as possible to drivers.

"Always make eye contact with the driver to make sure they have seen you - you don't want to assume they have seen you.  Only cross at intersections or crosswalks.  Make sure that when you're walking with headphones in that you don't have it turned up so loud that you can't hear the traffic.  Always try to wear brightly colored clothing for visibility, especially when you are exercising alongside a roadway.  Always walk against the flow of traffic rather than with the traffic."

The Statewide Pedestrian Awareness Campaign kicks off today until the end of the week. For more information visit savemolives.com or follow on social media at Save MO Lives.
