Malfunction triggers Cooper Nuclear Station sirens

A problem with the Alert and Notification System in the vicinity of Cooper Nuclear Station caused several of the system sirens to sound Tuesday morning.

Corporate Media and Media Services Supervisor Mark Becker said if it was an emergency the station would have made a different sound and the Emergency Alert System would alert television and radio stations.

"On Tuesday morning, we did have two of our sirens go off. They weren't necessarily the same sounds that we would have for Cooper Nuclear Station in the event that there was an incident at the plant, but they went off for a couple minutes. But the system does function appropriately. If there had been an activation, sirens would have gone off, people would have been notified through the EAS system and TV and radio."

According to the Nebraska Public Power District officials this was a false system activation that set off several sirens near the plant. The cause of the false activation is under investigation.

The Cooper Nuclear Station is located four miles south of Brownville, NE.
