Clarinda City Council talks Waste Water Treatment Plant and increases pay for city workers

The Clarinda City Council met recently. The city is currently in the planning stages of building a new Waste Water Treatment Plant. The new system stems from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources regulations for the treatment of waste water. The city is still in the preliminary design phase of the project. Clarinda City Manager, Gary McClarnon, says the city will need a loan from the state of Iowa to continue building the plant.

"Obviously with this project we are going to have to get a loan through the state of Iowa to pay for this.  Right now we're looking at a little over a $12 million project total."

During the meeting, changes to the City's Employee Handbook were made.  The Employee Benefits Commitee approved a small increase in pay for city workers.

"We started looking at the wage suveys that we had and discovered that we're probably a little low on the pay scale for those areas.  So in order to help with the turnover rate, we did decide to bump up our police officers' wage by about a dollar fifty an hour, and the public works department by one dollar an hour.  And this is just for the full-time employees."

The other change in the handbook will be to increase the employee contribution for health insurance to 10%. Voting for the new employee handbook was approved unanimously.
