City officials break ground for new public safety building

Maryville city officials broke ground yesterday afternoon for a new Maryville Public Safety building to be located at 1st and Vine, just south of downtown. Maryville City Manager Greg McDanel says the new facility is ideally located to serve the community.

"We worked really hard to try to find property downtown to be central to the community, not necessarily from a law enforcement standpoint, but definitely for fire service.  So to be able to partner with the Maryville RII school district and to be able to purchase this property has been tremendous."

The property is located at the former site of Washington Middle School.

Maryville Public Safety Director Keith Wood has been in his current position for the past 30 years. He says the new facility will give his department needed space to do their job properly.

"The place we are in right now, for example what I call the squad room is also the kitchen which is also the evidence processing room which is also the on and on and on, which isn't always conducive.  I know I've seen guys sitting back with their evidence after they've arrested somebody, grabbing a quick sandwich with some meth not too far away on the table.  That is less than ideal and we'll actually have a place for all that to be done at now in the future."

Construction work on the new Maryville Public Safety building is expected to take one year to complete.
