City officials attend retail conference to recruit business to Maryville

Maryville City Manager Greg McDanel, Assistant City Manager Ryan Heiland and Nodaway County Economic Development Director Josh McKim recently attended a national real estate-retail business conference in Las Vegas. McDanel says the event is the largest of its type in the world and was a great opportunity to recruit businesses to Maryville.

"The city took some new data on our trade market and our trade area to retailers.  And retailers are generally interested in the market.  We have some opportunities in front of us and now it's on the path of defining those relationships and pairing those interested parties up with the property owners."

McDanel says the new data more accurately shows the reach the community has in attracting customers to Maryville.

"One of the largest challenges for economic development for rural communities is telling national businesses, national retailers, the accurate story of our local market.  So Maryville is not just a population of 12,000 - what's on the city limit sign, plus college students, but it's a complex market that pulls all the way into Clarinda, Albany.  Our customized trade area based on the new information is about 58,000 people that do routine shopping in our community.   And that does not include anybody who would come here from St. Joe and vice versa.  So it's a larger market and to get that data in front of national retailers and let them to understand that our market is large enough demographic community to meet their requirements is part of the challenge and part of the process."

McDanel says the new data comes from a study commissioned by the Maryville City Council.
