City Council discussions on medical marijuana have begun

The Maryville City Council recently heard a report from City Manager Greg McDanel on the need for future discussions concerning medical marijuana regulations. McDanel says the discussions stem from the passage of Amendment Two last November.

"Amendment two only provides a certain wheelhouse that municipalities can regulate medical marijuana with those concerning time, manner, and place of operations which has some zoning elements to it.  So city staff has been drafting some proposed code and we'll take that to the planning and zoning board on June 26th. And then we'll have a public hearing and take draft ordinance to the council July 8th."

McDanel says there are some zoning regulations the city can control in regulating medical marijuana operations within the city limits.

"The zoning code allows for certain buffers around daycare, elementary schools, as well as different childcare facilities.  The buffer included for Amendment Two is 1000 feet for medical marijuana facilities.  The state law does allow municipalities to select less than that.  And certainly finding that distance whether it's tied to our alcohol distances and licenses or whether it's anywhere between that and a 1000 feet approved by Amendment Two is probably the big element for discussion."

McDanel adds Maryville city officials, like many communities in Missouri, have already been approached by potential operators of medical marijuana businesses.
