Agencies to assess flood damage

Governor Mike Parson announced Thursday that Missouri has requested the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) participate in a joint preliminary damage assessment across 56 counties, almost half of the 114 counties in the state, in response to recent natural disasters and worsening weather conditions. The joint teams will survey damage that began with severe storms on April 29 and have continued since.

Assessments are expected to begin on June 12th and will be conducted by FEMA, U.S. Small Business Administration, State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), and local emergency management officials. SEMA will utilize a helicopter to survey damage to homes that are inaccessible and cannot be assessed on the ground. The Governor says Individual Assistance to homeowners and renters who've experienced qualifying losses will be prioritized over Public Assistance which assists governments and eligible nonprofit organizations.

Counties eligible for Individual Assistance include Andrew, Atchison, Buchanan, Grundy, and Holt.
Counties eligible for Public Assistance include Caldwell, Gentry, Grundy, Linn, Macon, Mercer, Nodaway, and Putnam.

National Flood Insurance Program figures show since March first that more than 600 claims have been filed in Missouri for flooding losses. More than 9 million dollars has been paid to 213 property owners and the figure is expected to rise as additional claims are resolved and filed.

On May 20, President Trump approved Governor Parson's request for a major disaster declaration to help local governements and nonprofit agancies in Andrew, Atchison, Buchanan and Platte recover from flooding and severe storms that occurred from March 11 to April 16.
