KXCV/KRNW listening area experiencing extensive flooding issues

The large amount of rain residents in the KXCV/KRNW listening area have experienced in the past few days is causing flooding issues for several roads in the region. According to the National Weather Service, the Maryville and Albany areas received nearly 4 and a half inches. Bethany reported 5 and a half inches while Tarkio reported just under 2 inches.

Roads closed in northwest Missouri include I-29 north of St. Joseph at mile marker 57 and the Highway 71 exit due to water over I-29 at mile marker 85. Route 59 from Rushville to Atchison, KS river crossing, Route 159 from Big Lake Rulo, Nebraska river crossing and Route 136 from Rock Port to Brownville, NE river crossing. Numerous county roads in the region are also closed due to flooding.

MoDOT area engineer Adam Watson says the heavy rainfall is adding to problems experienced from rains earlier this spring.

"We had flooding initially in March and that destroyed some of the levees.  The levees protected not just farmland, property or buildings, it also protected highways.  So now these highways are open to every time the river rises.  And we have had enough rain here and north to have the river rising considerably.  Roads that might have been starting to dry out are now getting recovered, reflooded essentially.  Hopefully they're not sustaining more damage, but I'm suspicious that some of these roads will take more damage so that'll have to be more work to get them to usuable shape."

Anyone driving in severe weather is advised to turn around when they reach flooded areas. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles so it's important to not try to cross flooded roads.
