Authorities investigating suspicious package at US Bank

Maryville Public Safety officers have closed off several blocks surrounding the US Bank Building at 120 South Main, just south of 1st Street.

Public safety director Keith Wood says a citizen forwarded a picture of a suspicious package just outside the US Bank building to a public safety officer at around 11:30am. Wood said after reviewing the photo, officers closed off an area one block each side of the facility and evacuated all the businesses and homes in that area.

"The presence of a pressure cooker in the parking lot of a bank is unusual in and of itself, and given the nature of the Boston bombings and the pressure cookers that were encountered there, all of this is done out of an abundance of caution," Wood said.

ATF agents are on the scene and they are currently awaiting bomb detection equipment. Wood said they are currently reviewing surveillance cameras at US Bank.

"We have a staff member out of Kansas City that has been here, and he's been working with corporate security to pull some of the video off. We're working on some things now. We may know who left it there, but we're still working on that."

After investigating the video, Wood adds a person has been detained for suspicious activity.

"There was some video footage that placed that young man there yesterday.  That's really all I can give right now."

Wood added that they are also using a drone from public safety to get a closer look at the package while they wait for other equipment to arrive.
