Area farmers get to discuss issues at morning coffee

Area Farmers will have the opportunity to discuss corn nitrogen management, replanting, forage production, feed options and more during a morning coffee meeting next Friday. Field Specialist in Agronomy, Wayne Flanary, say the purpose of the meeting is to address the issues caused by wet, saturated soils due to the recent flooding.

"Some of the ground hasn't been planted yet.  Others, the corn growing there, if we can get the water off of it within 36-48 hours.  Since it's cool, the plants may survive.  There may be some damage continued if it continues to be raining.  The plant just can't respond with its root systems in wet soils."

Flanary says the meeting will also address forage issues.

"With the cool season, the spring season we've had, we're short on forages already.  And there's not much forage being harvested.  And what will be is getting pretty mature, too.  It's headed out.  So we need to think and plan ahead about our forages."

The meeting is set for Friday, June 7th at 7a.m. at the Atchison County Extension Office.
