Young turkey hunters harvest 2540 birds

According to preliminary data from the Missouri Department of Conservation, young turkey hunters harvested 2,540 turkeys during the 2019 spring youth season this past weekend. The youth season age range is from 6-15 years old. Spokesperson with the Missouri Department of Conservation, Joe Jerek, says this was a good opportunity for the youth to get a jump start on the turkey season.

"Every spring we offer a special youth weekend before the opening of the regular spring turkey season each spring.  It varies, but it's usually in early April.  And again, our youth spring turkey weekend gives young hunters a chance to get out and harvest a bird really before the regular turkey hunting season opens in the spring.  And that runs April 15th through May 5th."

Jerek adds that youth hunters in Nodaway County harvested 12 birds and 26 birds in Livingston County. Spring turkey hunting continues with the upcoming regular spring turkey hunting season April 15 through May 5. For more information on spring turkey hunting, visit mdc.mo.gov.
