The Use Tax approved for Maryville

Maryville voters approved a special use tax for on-line purchases during yesterday's election. 451 voters cast their ballot in favor of the issue while 322 voted against the proposal. Maryville City Manager Greg McDanel says he's pleased with the results of the vote.

"The City of Maryville is elated with the citizens' decision to approve the Use Tax and take care of a critical issue that simply wasn't going away for our community.  I think voters have taken the time to gain some information since November and kind of digest that and understand the importance of that to local business and to our community."

McDanel says the use tax will go into effect on July 1.

"..the first day of the new quarter.  The City of Maryville will begin tracking the revenue from the use tax and be able to take that into our budget preparations ro October for our next fiscal year.  And be able to see how much of those revenues have been recaptured and what we can do moving forward, keeping those dollars right here local."

The use tax approved by voters for online purchases equals the current Maryville sales tax residents pay for purchases from local businesses.
