Senator Hegeman talks transportation, broadband, and water projects

Missouri State lawmakers continue to work on the final numbers for the 2020 fiscal year budget. 12th District State Senator Dan Hegeman is chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee and says Governor Parson, the House and Senate all have different approaches to funding transportation needs in the state.

"The Senate came back for various reasons with yet a different version.  The Senate's version in working with the governor's office too an additional campaign of $50 million up front for additional bridge replacement in the state of Missouri to speed up the planned bridge replacements in the state of Missouri.  And then we would bond up to about $301 million for an additional total of 250 bridges across the state of Missouri.  Again these are bridges that are already part of the planned process.  We would just speed that up and then that would open up some room to add new projects in."

Hegeman also says lawmakers are hoping to expand broadband services in the state.

"The House differed from the governor a little bit on that and the Senate went back with the governor's recommendation of $5 million for broadband.  That'll be something we'll discuss in conference between the House and the Senate.  Also, we had some water projects out there and the Senate went with the $10 million for these water projects throughout the state of Missouri to bring drinking water.  Of course last year we had a drought in north Missouri which certainly extensuated and highlighted the need for good drinking water sources, in north Missouri in particular.  Happy to do that.  Again the House decreased the governor's recommendation and the Senate went with the governor's recommendation again."
