MDC cautions trimming trees in unsafe winter conditions

Between a winter storm last weekend and another expected this weekend, snowfall in northwest Missouri could cause issues with trees.
The Missouri Department of Conservation is encouraging Missouri residents to be cautious with tree limbs and damaged trees. MDC Community Forester Ann Koenig says during snowy conditions it is not a good time to work on trees.

"Right now with snow on the ground and on roofs, it's just simply not a safe time to be working on trying to trim trees.  If there's a branch blocking your garage or driveway and it's down on the ground, then that can be moved off to the side. We really want to be careful with using chainsaws in unsafe conditions."

Koenig adds the MDC encourages residents to not take on more than they can handle and to hire a professional to work on trees. She says the outlook for trees at the moment is good even with the heavy snowfall.

"I think we're fortunate in this storm in that it's a minority of trees that came over at their roots.  And mostly we've got some damage in the crown. There's going to be some work to do but time is on our side.  We can just wait to see how things look. Trees will bounce back from this.  Even with trees that have removed some branches,  they'll put on some new growth in the spring.  It's amazing how much better they'll look."
