Initiatives to revitalize downtown discussed

The Maryville City Council discussed some of the potential initiatives to revitalize downtown Maryville at its meeting Monday night.
Maryville City Manager Greg McDanel says the council is continuing to move forward to help property owners in downtown.

"We're kind of discussing from downtown design guidelines to historic preservation districts to side grants. There's a whole spectrum of initiatives that city council is looking for to move on this year and work with the downtown group and property owners to really revitalize our downtown."

McDanel also adds there is more for the city to do to encourage development downtown.

"There's a lot of physical enhancements that the city can do, but we can also set the frame work for incentives such as facade grant programs, chapter 353 tax abatements.  Other things that are authorized by state statutes that we have not implemented here. This will protect downtown now and into the future as well as provide, again, that incentive for developers to make those investments."
