Artist in Residence program started at Waubonsie State Park

Waubonsie State Park in southwest Iowa started the Artist in Residence Program this week. The program gives park-goers an opportunity to engage with the natural resources of the park from a different perspective. Golden Hills Project Coordinator, Rebecca Castle, says this is the first program of its type to be implemented in any of Iowa's State Parks.

"The goal of the residency is to connect with the broader audience of park-goers.  Ultimately, we want to increase the number of visitors and educate more people, not only about the Golden Hills eco-system, but about visual arts."

Tom Harnack is the programs first Artist in Residence. The Carroll, Iowa native has worked as an artist for the past 37 years and is accomplished in all aspects of ceramics. Harnack will leave a permanent work of art for the park and conduct a public engagement session during the day. Castle says Harnack will also host open studio hours where he encourages the public to attend.

"Tom will be having open studio hours from 6:00-8:00pm on Tuesday, February 5th, Thursday, Feb 7th, Tuesday the 12th and Thursday the 14th.  Visitors are encouraged to come out and talk to Tom and learn about the ceramics process."

Harnack's residency will last through mid-February.
