Water & sewer rates to go up in Clarinda

The Clarinda City Council approved an ordinance to increase the water/sewer rates at its meeting Wednesday night.
Clarinda City Manager Gary McClarnon says there are a few reasons for the increase.

"Our water utility actually lost money last year so we had to go through and do an analysis to try to get back in the black so to speak.  We're in the process of building a new sewer plant, so obviously we need to go ahead and increase rates for that as well because we will have a 20-year loan of approximately $12 million.  So we decided that over the next 3 years, we will step up both the water and sewer rates to get to where we need to be."

The increase will be 22 percent next year and 9 percent each of the two years after.  The increase will go into effect January 1st, 2019.
