Open burning for St. Joseph starts Monday

City of St. Joseph officials have announced that fall open burning has been approved.
Starting Monday and going through Sunday, November 25th open burning is permitted within the City of St. Joseph. Public Information Officer for the City of St. Joseph Health Department Stephanie Malita says there are a few regulations to open burning.

"Open burning is on residential properties only.  And it's just yard waste, so no trash, paper, lumber or building debris.  It's only allowed between the hours of 10am to 3:30, but that is 7 days a week.  The fires have to be kept in a metal container with a volume equal to 55 gallons.  It's got to be at least 15 feet away fro the home or any building."

Malita adds St. Joseph residents should be aware of possible changes for temporary burning bans in case of inclement weather.

"Periodically the winds will be too high, but the fire chief or the health director can invoke a temporary ban usually lasting one day.  They'll make a new announcement every day.  We usually send out a press notification at that time.  Then it'll be on websites or Facebook, that kind of thing."

Once again, the city of St. Joseph can burn yard waste on residential properties starting Monday and going through November 25th from 10 am to 3:30 pm.
