November is American Diabetes Month

November is American Diabetes Month and the Nodaway County Health Center is encouraging diabetes awareness.
RN and Health Educator with the Nodaway County Health Department Kathryn Hawley says many people that have diabetes may not know it yet.

"Take this month and just get tested - see where your blood sugar's at.  Because the CDC put out some statistics that 30.3 million U.S. adults have diabetes and one in four don't know they even have it.  Diabetes is the 7th leading cause of death in the United States.  Diabetes is the number one cause of kidney failure, lower limb amputations, and adult on-set blindness.  And over the past 20 years the number of adults diagnosed with diabetes has tripled as the American population has aged and become more overweight or obese.  So it's important.  It's a real easy test."

Hawley adds there are resources for those who have or think they may have diabetes.

".....whether you're newly diagnosed or even if you've had diabetes for a really long time, the diabetes.org website has an 800 number as well as a chatline for information on nutrition, diabetes care management, all the way to exercise, medication, and supplies.  It's basically 1-800-diabetes or you can visit your nodawaypublichealth.org for direct links that can take you to all different areas of your inquiry."
