Holiday Safety Tips

The Missouri Insurance Information Service cautions that crowded shopping malls, streets and parking lots can provide ample opportunity for theft during the holiday season. That's according to a spokesperson for the organization Stephen Witte.

"Part of our safety tips is to make sure when you go to the mall or go to different shopping areas that you park your car in a brightly lit area; that you lock it.  That if you have valuables, put them in the trunk; keep them out of sight.  If you're shopping in some areas that you feel unsafe with, maybe you should shop with friends or in a group or something so you're unlikely to be robbed or bugged in that type of area."

Witte adds along with shopping, Christmas trees and decorations require special care.

"You put it in a sturdy stand and you water it daily so it doesn't dry out and so the lights don't burn it down while you're away.  Make sure you use proper outlets and you don't use extension chords that you've had the last 40 years.  Don't be too cheap.  Make sure all your outlets are wired correctly and make sure you unplug your tree lights when you're away from home or sleeping because you never know what might happen."
