Herb Dieterich to be honored by NCHS

The Nodaway County Historical Society will honor posthumously a longtime northwest Missouri educator into their Stairway of Stars Saturday afternoon. Herb Dieterich was a principal at Horace Mann High School and later an educator at Northwest Missouri State University from 1928 to 1968. Vice-President of the Nodaway County Historical Society and Coordinator of the Public History and Museum Studies Program at Northwest Missouri State University Dr. Elyssa Ford, says Dieterich was also a noted expert in six-man football.

"He went to places across the state of Missouri, especially this northwest region and to Kansas, and even as far as New York state to hold basically training sessions with football coaches in those areas so that they could learn about 6-man football and how to really play that sport."

Dieterich has also been honored by the Missouri State High School Activities Association and the National Federation of State High School Athletic Associations and has been inducted into the Northwest M-Club Hall of Fame.
Dieterich's honor this Saturday is part of the Historical Society's programming for the traveling Smithsonian exhibit Hometown Teams: How Sports Shape America on view through Sunday.
Ford says response to the Smithsonian exhibit has been excellent.

"The museum has had a lot of attendance.  There's been a really steady flow of visitors to come check out both the Smithsonian Exhibit and our local sports exhibit.  I know last week before Thanksgiving break, we had a group of about 100 middle school students from Maryville Middle School who came out to take a look at it.  And I think we also had a groupd of students from St. Gregory's who came out.  It's been really fun to be able to see the students be able to get involved in that and really take advantage of this unique opportunity."

The ceremony welcoming Herb Dieterch into the Nodaway County Historical Association's Stairway of the Stars will be held Saturday afternoon at two o'clock at the museum located at 110 North Walnut in Maryville.
