Be a Santa to a Senior program

The Home Instead Senior Care Office in St. Joseph is inviting the community to provide gifts and cheer to seniors who aren't able to see family or friends this holiday season through its Be a Santa to a Senior program. Home Instead Senior Care Owner Brent Hoffart says this is a way for people to take time to recognize and appreciate what the seniors have done for everyone.

"Be a Santa to a Senior was started back in 2003, about 15 years ago, by Home Instead Senior Care and it's just a way to give back to older adults.  Some of the seniors that are out there that might be lonely or isolated or financially challenged, may not have family in the area, and are left alone during the holidays.  This is just a way to kind of brighten their holidays and brighten their spirits and just give back to those folks that have paved the way for our generation."

Hoffart also says the best part is getting to help seniors who are in need of holiday cheer.

"I just think that it's very important that we take time over the holidays to recognize them and appreciate what they've done for us and kind of brighten their holidays as well.  You know, a big part of this programs is the companionship that they get out of that gift delivery as well.  So it's great to see the smiles on their faces and ultimately, it's not about the gifts, it's about the cheer we're spreading to these seniors who might otherwise not have brightness in their holidays."

To donate a gift, people can visit the St. Joseph Price Chopper and choose an ornament on the Be a Santa to a Senior display tree. Purchase the requested gift listed on the ornament and return the unwrapped gift back to the store with the ornament attached. Community volunteers will wrap and deliver the gifts in time for the holidays.
