South Nodaway & Jefferson to fully co-op in 2019-2020 school year

The Jefferson C-123 and South Nodaway R-4 Boards of Education both approved the finishing touches on a full athletic co-op between the two schools. The approval added varsity basketball to the co-op, which was the last sport that was not combined, for the 2019-20 school year. South Nodaway Superintendent Johnnie Silkett says the full co-op has been discussed for a few years now.

"We've been co-oping different sports and adding sports for the last 7-8 years.  Two years ago we had started a discussion about co-oping everything together.  It came around this year that we're both pretty much lined up and ready to go.  Our numbers have dropped enough, our participation numbers.  We decided to have open forum meetings with our constituents and they did the same thing in Jefferson."

Jefferson Superintendent Tim Jermain says finishing the full co-op will be beneficial to both numbers and the feeling of the students.

"Looking at the numbers for next year, it became apparent that South Nodaway - especially on the boys side- their numbers were not going to be good.  Looking at future enrollments down the road, both boards felt like the timing was right to go ahead and complete the co-op for all sports.  I know one of the things that our students talked about was how it was a little bit awkward to co-op and then compete against them in 1 sport.  But really it was due to the numbers trying to sustain the program."

The two schools will have fully combined all of their athletic programs at the start of the 2019-20 school year.
