Requests made at the City Council meeting

The Maryville City Council heard requests from area organizations for support at its meeting last night.
One of the organizations that made a support request was the new Nodaway Humane Society. Spokesperson and volunteer with the new Nodaway Humane Society Crystal Ward says the society requested the normal fund amount with one extra partnership.

"In the years passed, the city has given us $60,000 to operate the shelter, and we're requesting that same amount.  We did add a few items in there, non-monetary things they can help us with as well as an increase. If they'd give us an extra $2500 and how'd we use that to help continue or establish a community-wide spade/neuter program.  We get a lot of requests from individuals who would like to get their animal fixed but can't afford it.  This would allow them to come get a voucher for no cost to them, have their animal fixed, and we'd reimburse  the vets for that fee."

Another of the organizations requesting support is Nodaway County Economic Development. Economic Development Director Josh McKim says they increased their request.

"We did increase it by $5000.  We'll see; that may or may not happen.  But they've been a long-time partner of ours and we'd appreciate any support they could give us.  They're roughly 40% of our budget, so it would be tremendously helpful."

McKim adds that the extra money would help fuel some new projects from Nodaway County Economic Development.

"We think that continuing to support our university presence here and supporting the funding at the state level for our universities would be important.  Support of our local industries is something we're going to be focusing on.  We're fortunate with Kawasaki's continued growth and continued development here.  So I think you can see, hopefully continue to see, some growth from our local industries as well."

The City Council also heard support requests from the Nodaway County Senior Center, Maryville Parks and Recreation, Maryville Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Maryville, Maryville Host Lions Club Farmers Market, and Maryville Public Arts Committee. The council did not make a final decision on requests at last night's meeting.
