Phone scam targets elderly

A telephone scam has been targeting the elderly citizens of Chillicothe.

In a press release, the Chillicothe Police Department informed the public that the caller misinforms you that he or she is with law enforcement from another country and that a family member has been involved in an accident or has been arrested. The scammer then tells you that you need to send money -- usually ranging in the thousands of dollars -- before this family member sees a judge.

If you encounter this caller, the Chillicothe Police Department encourages you not to send any money but to hang up immediately and to contact the family member that was mentioned in the call. The call usually comes from an "809" area code, but other reported area codes include "284" or "876." These codes represent the Dominican Republic, British Virgin Islands (The Bahamas), and Jamaica.

If you ever have a question about a call, email, or phone number that doesn't seem right to you, you are encouraged to contact the Chillicothe Police Department or your local law enforcement for assistance.
