The Bearcat athletic department is officially under new leadership.

Andy Peterson was named director of athletics at Northwest Missouri State University Tuesday morning. Peterson, with 5 years as an athletic administrator already under his belt, credits previous coaches and the current Northwest staff for helping him reach this position.

"It's a testament to the people that have been around me and supported me, and let me fall on my face a few times and learn," Peterson said. "It's very humbling. It's been kind of a weird transition, but I couldn't be more happy and more excited to get going and represent all of the student athletes at Northwest Missouri State."

The Trenton native also served as assistant men's basketball coach for seven years and head women's golf coach for the last four years at Northwest, but it wasn't until he took charge of the day-to-day operations for Bearcat facilities in 2013 that he believed he wanted to pursue an AD job.

"When you start going to all of the meetings around campus and you start working with all of the head coaches, you start having direct contact with all of the student athletes regardless of what sport they are, that's when those relationships really start to build. I kind of started to feel a different pull in my heart about where I wanted to go and what I wanted to do with my career."

Peterson added that he will continue to serve as the head women's golf coach for now, but says he'll have a graduate assistant helping with those responsibilities.
