After finishing second in the MIAA in 2017, the league's media and coaches expect Northwest Missouri State University to return to the top spot in the conference this fall.

The Bearcats were picked first in the MIAA Preseason Coaches and Media Polls. They gathered 4 first place votes from the coaches. In the MIAA Preseason Media Poll, Northwest garnered 14 first place votes.

Northwest's streak of consecutive conference titles was snapped at four last year. The Bearcats opened the season with eight straight wins before suffering back-to-back losses to Pittsburg State and Fort Hays State – the eventual conference champ.

The 'Cats finished 2017 at 9-3 overall, including a playoff loss to Ashland.
