Northwest picked to defend MIAA title by coaches, media

For the fifth consecutive season, Northwest Missouri State University sits atop the MIAA's preseason polls. Both the coaches and media picked the defending NCAA Division 2 National Champions to win the league for the 29th time.

Northwest received 9 of 12 first place votes from the conference's coaches, and 36 of 39 first place votes from the MIAA's media outlets.

The Bearcats have won 30 consecutive games dating back to 2015, and earned the program's sixth national championship last December with a 29-3 win over North Alabama at Children's Mercy Park.

Northwest also announced its team captains for the 2017 season. Captains include quarterback Jonathan Baker, wide receiver Shane Williams, running back Jordan Grove, defensive back Eddie Richey, linebacker Cole Forney and defensive lineman Bobby Gruenloh.

The 'Cats open the season at home on Thursday, August 31 vs. Emporia State.
