The first two national championship teams in Northwest Missouri State University football will be immortalized in the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame next month.
President and executive director of the hall of fame, Jerald Andrews, made the announcement of the Bearcats' induction on Wednesday afternoon.
"They were the base, they were the ones that went from 0-11 to 15-0, and that's probably never been done before," Northwest Missouri State athletic director and former head coach, Mel Tjeerdsma said. "They're very deserving." All of Coach Tjeerdsma's comments on the honor are available above.
The 1998 Bearcats went 15-0 and won the program's first national title with a 24-6 win over Carson Newman.
In 1999, Northwest posted come-from-behind victories in every postseason game, including a four overtime 58-52 win over Carson Newman in the championship game. The second championship squad finished the year 14-1.
The Missouri Sports Hall of Fame induction will be held Sunday, November 12 at the Stoney Creek Hotel and Conference Center in Independence. The event begins with a noon reception, followed by a 1pm dinner. The program will follow.
