With the official arrival of autumn, it's time to do a safety check on fireplaces and wood stove systems. Wood fuel heating devices are very popular, but according to the Government Affairs Director and General Counsel with the Missouri Insurance Coalition, Stephen Witte, improper installation, operation, and maintenance can cause serious problems -- in particular, fires.
Witte explains most wood heating fires are caused by operational problems, such as failing to clean the flue system or prematurely disposing of hot ashes. These problems can be easily avoided if the right steps are taken before it is too late. However, a professional's help is highly recommended.
