Northwest Missouri State Univeristy's Safe Ride Home Program has been awarded a grant from Walmart worth $1,800. The program uses a shuttle bus service that provides safe and timely transportation within Maryville city limits. The service works in coordination with Northwest's University Police Department and is offered by students for students.
University Police Chief Clarence Green says the program applied for the grant. Green also says the funding boost will help support the program during a time of budget cuts and state reductions.
Safe Ride Home provides transportation to retail locations throughout the week as well as a late night taxi service to assist students who may find themselves in unsafe situations. Figures released by the University indicate that, since its inception in 2004, Safe Ride has reduced the number of harmful driving situations, including driving while intoxicated, by 65 percent.
