MoDOT technicians to offer assistance with child car safety seats

Certified Child Passenger Safety technicians will provide free assistance to parents and caregivers on child car seat installation and usage next Wednesday, May 24, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the western-most parking lot of the Missouri Department of Transportation's office at 3602 North Belt Highway in St. Joseph.

Missouri law requires all children under eight to be in a child safety or booster seat until they are at least 80 pounds or 4' 9" tall.Northwest District Child Passenger Safety Liaison Lana Allen says children are recommended to ride rear facing and to not use booster seats until past four-years-old.

The variety of makes and models of car seats on the market can make proper installation confusing for many. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, three out of four child safety seats are improperly installed.

During the event on May 24 technicians will install car seats or check for correct installation.
