Defense dominated the annual Northwest Missouri State Football Spring Game Thursday night at Bearcat Stadium.

The White team earned a 17-7 victory over the Green team, but their lead was just 7-0 entering the fourth quarter.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Braden Wright rushed for a touchdown in the second quarter to open a one-possession lead for the White squad.

The score remained 7-0 until Parker Sampson drilled a 38-yard field goal through the north uprights in the fourth quarter. Sampson started the night 0-2 on field goal attempts with one dropping well short, and another missing wide. He finished the night 1-3 on field goals and 2-2 on PATs.

Trailing 10-0, the Green team broke through with a long touchdown pass from sophomore Jadyn Kowalski to sophomore wide receiver Armani Carmickle. The scoring play cut the deficit to 10-7 late in the final quarter.

But on the next drive, Raymond Thomas put the game on ice for the White team. The redshirt freshman running back from Bradenton, FL took a hand-off, burst through the line of scrimmage and ran away from the defense on the way to a 70-yard rushing touchdown.

Northwest Missouri State will officially open the 2018 football season August 30 at home against Missouri Western. The Bearcats are coming off their first season under head coach Rich Wright where they finished 9-3 overall and reached the playoffs for the 14th consecutive season.
