MARYVILLE, MO (2011-09-19)
While Missouri lawmakers are focused on job creation during the special session, the state's three branches of government are also talking about policy that could impact prisons in Maryville, Chillicothe, and Cameron.
Members of Missouri's executive, legislative, and judicial branches are working together on a new project aimed at keeping non-violent offenders out of prison. Governor Jay Nixon says that could help reduce costs of running the state facilities. The working group is exploring keeping non-violent convicts in treatment centers and probation programs. Nixon says similar policies in Kansas, Arkansas, and Kentucky have saved those states money.
Nixon says he hopes proposed legislation will be ready this winter.© Copyright, KXCV
