SAVANNAH, MO (2011-09-14)
After nearly 3 years of false starts, financial problems, and contractor negotiations, construction has finally started on a new jail in Savannah.
The Andrew County commissioners and local dignitaries held a groundbreaking ceremony yesterday morning. Nearly 6 million dollars of the cost for the Andrew County Jail is coming from USDA rural development loans to replace the 1905 structure currently being used. The new jail will be more than 17,000 square feet and be located behind the O'Reilly Auto Parts building in Savannah. Construction is expected to take one year.
