ST. JOSEPH, MO (2010-09-23) We've learned the initial results of the investigation into the killing of a St. Joseph police officer.
The department's investigation shows mixing up guns might have been the cause. On Wednesday of last week officer Dan DeKraai was fatally shot in the back by officer Jason Strong while the two were on break in between training exercises. According to the police chief, officer DeKraai requested officer Strong shoot him with the plastic projectiles used in the training, saying he wanted to experience it before the training continued. He and Strong had just returned from a convenience store during their break. The investigation shows Strong had transitioned back to his regular service revolver before leaving, and quote "Failed to realize" he had not transitioned back to the training gun with plastic bullets before firing at DeKraai's back. The department says it does not allow for such unsupervised demonstrations, and that training is supposed to be done in a controlled environment with instructor super vision. Results of the investigation are being forwarded to the county presecutor for review which is standard procedure in such cases.
