MARYVILLE, MO (2009-09-01) Talks continue between two groups over a right to life rally coming up in Maryville.
Tri County Right-To-Life wants to hold a "Life Chain" event on Maryville's Main Street on October 4th. The Event is to be held on the East side of the street on the City's sidewalk. For the first time in more than a decade, organizers are being asked to sign a hold harmless agreement that will keep the City from being sued if there are any injuries associated with the rally. But The President of the Group Lisa Goedken says being asked to take on legal liability places a burden on their. First amendment rights togather on the City's sidewalks. They City of Maryville maintains it's not a first amendment issue so much as it is a standard practice: they City almost always requires groups organizing gatherings to have an insurance policy to guard against liability, and a Hold-Harmless Agreement with participants of the Life Chain is being recommended by the City's Insurance Consultant. The two sides continue debating the matter and it's been tentatively placed on the September 14th City Council Agenda.
