It took some sacrifices, but last night the Savannah City Council approved next year's budget.

A $685,000 payment the city owes on water and sewer is due on December 1st and Savannah City manager Jill Cornett and others have been planning months before last night's passage. Actions have included laying off city employees, a 30% rate increase on water, a 25% increase on sewer service, a spending freeze, and other strategies. Savannah mayor David Ingersoll says the city is much healthier than this time last year.

Ingersoll says future utility rate hikes for Savannah residents are at the mercy of the utility companies providing the service but hopefully citizens won't see massive rate increases moving forward.
