Overall, it appears reported offenses are holding about steady during the last three years, depending on the category. Northwest Missouri State received a "90" out of 100 safety rating based on the statistics. The top offense was referrals for disciplinary action of liquor law violations there were 77 of those last year. The second highest crime category was burglaries with 44 reported in 2009. Arrests for drugs reached a new 3 year high averaging about one arrest every month. Four sex crimes on campus were reported last year and no hate crimes were reported. The University Police Department says it focuses on a community policing approach to keep the campus as safe as possible concentrating on maximum patrol activities, interacting with the campus community, and educational programming.
