Mozingo Bait Ban

Wayman

MARYVILLE, MO (2010-10-14) State conservationists are targeting Mozingo Lake near Maryville and Smithville Lake near Kansas City for a ban on bait and they are asking local fisherman for help.

Silver carp and bighead carp populations have exploded in the past year, mainly because of all the rain releasing the species into regional revers. They are starting to wipe out food sources for native fish and can grow up to 50 pounds jumping out of the water when startled by boats and injuring boaters. Missouri Department of Conservation spokesman Bill Graham says not using them as bait can help stop the spread of the invaders. The conservation office says if you do catch the carp as bait to put them on ice which shock kills them but keeps them fresh enough to fish with. It's illegal to transport live silver and bighead carp in Missouri.
