It could be a while before investigators determine the cause of the elevator explosion in Atchison.
But grain dust has always been a problem for AG operations, and even individual producers in the field face a danger. That's according to agri-business specialist Bob Kelly with the University Extension Agency in St. Joseph. He says grain dust getting into field equipment during harvest probably won't cause an explosion, but can burn up machinery.
Kelly adds the explosion factor elevators face is not as great for individual grain bins on the farm, as those have much more open ventilation with the tops exposed to the air for natural ventilation.© Copyright, KXCV
