ST. JOSEPH, MO (2010-11-30) It was quite a scare for people at an apartment complex in East St. Joseph early this morning.
The building they called home erupted in flames shortly before 1:00 a.m. on the 5500 block of Beechwood Boulevard. When crews arrived, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the roof and an upper level apartment in the six unit complex. About 18 people lived there. At one point, witnesses told dispatchers one victim jumped from a window to escape the smoke and flames. Three of the upper level apartments received heavy fire damage; the lower floors received major water damage. Captain Top Roe with the St. Joseph Fire Department said the flames overtook the house very rapidly. Investigators are still looking into the cause of the fire. Water used to put the fire out froze to the street, so salt crews were called into melt the ice. The building is a total loss, due to heavy fire damage to the roof and upper levels. The Red Cross is helping victims with food, clothing, and a place to stay.
