Rural Grocery Stores

Wayman

MARYVILLE, MO (2010-11-15) An economic trend has small town grocery stores disappearing in america, especially in the midwest.

Researchers at the Nebraska based center for rural affairs say the locally owned mom and pop stores are finding it increasingly harder to compete with big city chains, especially with shrinking populations. Jon Bailey is with the center and says smaller communities are creating some creative business models to keep operations profitable. Bailey says when a local grocery closes, the town looses access to healthy varieties of quality food as well as tax revenue and a community gathering place.
